Install .NET and your editor

Prepare your machine and verify that the SDK works.

Download the SDK

Visit Microsoft's .NET download page and install a current supported .NET SDK for your operating system. A runtime alone cannot create and build projects.

Choose your editor

Install Visual Studio Code with C# Dev Kit, or use Visual Studio on Windows. An ordinary terminal is sufficient for this course.

Check the installation

Open a new terminal and run:

dotnet --version
dotnet --list-sdks

You should see installed SDK version information. Exact version numbers may differ.

Practice checkpoint

  1. Explain SDK versus runtime in one sentence.
  2. Run dotnet --version.
  3. Find the folder where you will save lesson projects.
Troubleshooting

If dotnet is not recognised, restart the terminal, confirm you installed an SDK, and check the official installation guide for your OS.
